PROGRAM

Moot Court is an appellate argument program and competition that we've created with help from the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF). Students write briefs based on an excerpt from the 2004 U.S. Supreme Court case, Roper vs Simmons (juvenile death penalty). This can be done as a classroom and/or after school activity. Get full (including Student Packet) classroom materials here. Or, you can download the Teacher's Guide and the Student Packet separately. All materials in PDF format. There is also a Brief Template (MS Word) that students can type their briefs in. Interested students can also take part in the competition.

This program is also part of our Project LEGAL.

COMPETITION

Teams of two to five students come to the Contra Costa County Courthouse in Martinez, on Saturday, October 21, 2006 to present their oral arguments before three-judge courts (made up of attorneys and judges). The format will be similar to CRF's Mock Trial pretrial motion. Each team will have two chances to present—once per side. Then we'll have the semifinal and championship rounds, lunch and awards. Entry fee is $25 per participant (includes snacks, pizza and a T-Shirt). Schools may have more than one team. Download student materials here. The competition runs from 8 AM to about 3 PM.
