LEGAL
(Legal Education Generates Active Learning)

Project LEGAL provides hands-on training for civics/government teachers. Participants do the Puttin on the Robes — Exploring the Legal Process simulation and walk through all three levels of the court system (trial, appellate, supreme) during the training. This program is aligned with California and other state civics/government curriculum standards. It includes literacy (thinking/writing instruction) activities which are aligned to California and other state Language Arts standards.

Teachers receive:

1. One “Puttin' on the Robes” simulation binder

2. One set of Moot Court materials

3. One set of literacy materials.

4. Training in the use of all these materials

5. After the training, we provide follow-up support.

In the SF Bay Area, there is an additional benefit. Through a generous grant from the Foundation of the State Bar, we will be helping teachers and students prepare to do an appellate argument. We will send law students from JFK Law school out to Contra Costa County high schools who will work one-on-one with students. Then attorneys and judges will come out to the schools and preside over the in-class arguments. Finally, any high school student can compete in our annual Moot Court (held in October) at the courthouse in Martinez.
