Carla Young Garrett—President and Ex-officio Board Member
LLB, New College of California School of Law (Admitted to practice in CA in 1979), California State University Hayward (Teaching Credentials– Single Subject, Social Science and Multiple Subject).

Ms. Garrett practiced law and then taught high school government and economics for a number of years. She also operated an education consulting business, where she wrote social science lessons for a diverse set of clients from Apple Computers to the San Joaquin County Office of Education. She has worked with school districts in California training teachers to use classroom-based simulations, including The Econogame®. Ms. Garrett belongs the California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS), California Association of School Economics Teachers (CASET), and The Foundation for the Teaching of Economics (FTE).

Frances B. Hayward—Board Chair
JD, UC Davis School of Law (Admitted to practice in CA in 1977)

Ms. Hayward practiced law for over 15 years. For the last ten years, she has owned Centerpoint Mediation, a divorce mediation center. She is the founder of Women Helping Women, a California non-profit organization dedicated to helping battered women make a new start.

Caroline Taylor—Secretary/Treasurer and Board Member
Attended San Francisco State University and Portland State University where she studied Russian, drama and English.

Ms. Taylor has over 10 years experience as a copy editor and writer, including extensive copyediting of the Hewlett Packard website. Ms. Taylor is currently a platinum level executive with Oasis LifeSciences.

Desiree de Liser—Board Member
BS Microbiology, California State University, Long Beach

Ms. de Liser is a laboratory scientist at a Maryland hospital. Her other talents include event planning for such organizations as the Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

Karen L. Bullard—Board Member
BA Liberal Arts, San Francisco State University

Ms. Bullard is the Information Systems manager at Medical Underwriters of California, an insurance management corporation that provides professional liability insurance for doctors. She is a member of Physicians Insurance Association of America (PIAA). Some of Ms. Bullard's other talents include choreography, singing, costume design and glass work.

Cristen Lunt, CPA—Board Member
BS, Accounting – St. Mary’s College

Ms. Lunt is Assistant Controller at Clif Bar. In her free time she hikes, bikes and walks her dog.

John D. Kubiatowicz—Board Member
PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Minor in Physics from MIT

Dr. Kubiatowicz is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineer and Computer Science Department at University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Kubiatowicz teaches courses in computer architecture at both undergraduate and graduate levels and does research in internet-scale systems, operating systems, compilers, and computer architectures.

Brian M. Welch

Mr. Welch has been a Deputy District Attorney for over 10 years. He also coached high school mock trial teams in the San Francisco Bay Area for 9 years, taking two teams to Nationals.

Stephen M. Greenberg
JD New College of California School of Law. (Admitted to practice in CA 1979.)

Mr. Greenberg is an appellate attorney specializing in criminal appeals. His been in practice for over 25 years and has also taught at JFK School of Law.

Stephen Schlosser
BS, MS in Metallurgy, Brooklyn Polytechnical Institute
MBA, University of Santa Clara

Mr. Schlosser is a Vice President and Managing Director at Avnet MTS in San Jose where he manages a staff of over 50 people.

Penelope Dyer
PhD, University of California, Berkeley

Dr. Dyer has worked in the field of education for over 30 years, in numerous capacities, including professor at U. C. Berkeley and Fresno State University. She was the team leader on the College Board’s latest endeavor “Springboard,” a college preparation program for middle school students. Dr. Dyer has taught middle and high school social studies and English. She has over 20 years experience as a trainer and curriculum designer for clients such as Apple Computers and Casio. She is active in the International Reading Association (IRA).

Mary Riordan-Karlsson
PhD, University of California, Berkeley

Dr. Riordan-Karlsson owns Karlsson Consulting where she provides business and educational consulting for school districts, state departments of education and high-tech companies. She also conducts professional development seminars in both private and public sectors, develops technology plans and professional development long-range plans. She does staff technology training as well as helps implement district-wide networks.

John Adams, (Adams and Associates)
BA, Advertising Design - Academy of Art College, San Francisco

Mr. Adams is a sculptor, painter, graphic designer, and design professor at University of New Mexico, Almagordo, where, he is active in numerous community art activities. He's been commissioned to do several large public art pieces including one in San Ramon, CA. Mr. Adams created the CE2 logo and the website banner.

Nicole Scherer-Heynick
State Fine Arts School: "Ecole Cantonale des Beaux Arts" Lausanne, Switzerland 1978 – 1982 and one year teacher preparation at the "Seminaire Pedagogique" 1983 – 1984 also in Switzerland.

Ms. Scherer-Heynick is an artist and art teacher. Ms. Scherer-Heynick created the main Econogame graphic which is on the website and the cover of the Teacher's Guide. She is also the creator of the cover graphics for the Center's government simulations (see the GovGames and TaxGame pages).
